Senior Projects Seminars

UCLA Design Media Arts — cultivating narrative, meaning, and object identity

About the Seminars

Camella Daeun Kim has led Senior Project Seminars at UCLA Design Media Arts, guiding students through intensive explorations of how objects acquire meaning and how personal identity is constructed through creative practice. Each seminar engages narrative, materiality, and the psychic energy invested in the things we make and keep.

Small Objects of Desire

Winter 2014 · UCLA Design Media Arts

This seminar examined how objects acquire meaning and how self-construction unfolds through cultivation. Students investigated the narratives embedded in everyday items and the ways personal histories are shaped by the things we choose to surround ourselves with.

Identity of Object, Place and Self

Winter 2017 · UCLA Design Media Arts

Scheduled for Winter 2017, this seminar was designed to explore the intersection of object identity, spatial context, and personal narrative. Students were invited to examine how place and material culture inform self-understanding and creative expression.

Teaching Philosophy

Kim's seminars emphasize close attention to narrative, meaning, and the psychic energy invested in objects. Through studio practice, critique, and research, students develop a deeper understanding of how material choices and conceptual frameworks shape both artwork and identity.
